Brighten up with bulbs

Now that spring is really with us, a quick and easy way to brighten up your garden is to use summer flowering bulbs.

All their bulbs, corms and tubers are New Zealand grown, with sizes and quality to envy.

OCTOBER 2007

Kids’ treats for Christmas day
We’re all guilty of over-indulging at Christmas, whether it’s alcohol, food or spoiling the kids with mountains of presents.
But by getting the kids involved in
growing their own vegetables for

Christmas dinner you might just get them looking forward to something other than presents - and eating something other than sweets.
“Getting your kids to grow vegetables is a fun and interactive way to teach them about the importance of balance in their diets,” says Awapuni gardening guru, Tod Palenski.
“It’s also a great family activity which teaches kids some useful practical skills. And they’ll love showing off their garden to friends and grandparents.”
Tod says spring is the perfect time to plant the vegetables you want to enjoy on Christmas day.
Because many vegetables prefer a well-drained, sunny situation, Tod recommends helping the kids to build their own raised-bed garden. Click here to read more.

Brighten up!
If you were taken with our last feature on planting a romantic cottage garden and you’re looking for ways to enhance your creation try adding height and colour with gorgeous Russell lupins.
Tall and stately when in flower, Russell lupins grow to around 50cm tall. Flowers are a colourful mix of

lavendars, blues, pinks, purples, yellows and reds.
Lupins flower in late spring, so now is an ideal time to plant them. For best results choose Awapuni’s Pop’n’Grow Lupin Gallery Mix. As with all Pop’n’Grow seedlings, Lupin Gallery Mix seedlings have their own individual root systems. This means the seedlings can be unwrapped, separated and prepared for planting without disturbing or breaking the roots.
Plant your lupins 50 cm apart in full sun in well-drained, moderately fertile, sandy soil which is slightly acidic. Water them well through the growing season and mulch well in dry areas.
Throughout October when you buy any three Pop’n’Grow perennials online at www.awapuni.co.nz you’ll get a free pot of our Pop'n'Grow Lupin Gallery Mix, containing nine plants, to add gorgeous colour and height to your garden.
