Okra plants have lush, large-lobed leaves. It produces tender, flavourful green pods, best cut when 7-10cm long. Okra plants have beautiful yellow flowers that attract pollinators.

In cooler regions, Okra plants are annuals, they are best grown in greenhouses. However, in hot regions (frost-free), they can be grown as perennials.

Once seedlings are planted, please refrain from replanting. Okra plants do not like being disturbed.

From seedling, okra plants reach maturity in approximately 30-40 days.  The plants can grow up to 3 to 6 feet tall - giving shade to plants grown underneath.

Okra plants can be planted in pots (with drainage) - choose a deep pot, at least 40 cm. Okra has long tap roots.

It's best to harvest when the okra pods are about 7 to 10 cm long (longer/older pods are tougher). After the first picking, remove of the lowest leaves to encourage more fruiting.

Best use: Gourmet vegetable (Okra pods are used in many stir-fried, braised, stewed or sautéed Asian, South American dishes like gumbos.)
