Your vege and herb gardens should be giving you lots to harvest right now. Asian greens, beans, cucumbers, capsicums, chillies and tomatoes will be ready for picking.
With the weather starting to cool down, try and keep on top of your watering, to keep enjoying your harvests. Keep picking your vege, to encourage more growth to come through. Including your chillies and peppers - if you leave them on the plant they’ll shrivel up. This can send signals to the main plant that it done its job and it will no longer produce more fruit. Extend your chilli season by continually picking until you can no longer stand the sight of them, and remember whole chillies freeze well too.
Spend time going through your garden, cleaning out any vege or herb that are looking a bit tired. If you’re after continuous crops, make sure to rotate your planting, by planting something new every few weeks. If your herbs have gone to seed, try keeping them in your garden. Flowers from many herbs such as parsley, dill, basil and coriander are magnets for beneficial insects and pollinators.
If you took on the challenge of growing our Atlantic giant pumpkins last year, keep them growing by giving them a bucket of water with some liquid fertiliser every second day. This variety was originally grown in Nova Scotia to produce fruit weighing 180kg or more!
Lastly, we recommend to start prepping for your autumn garden, turn over your compost and start applying Tui organic seaweed to your garden. Start planting your brassicas, celery, carrots, kale and spring onions. For some autumn colour, plant some antirrhinums, aquilegia and canterbury bells.
Handy tip: If you’re looking for natural fertiliser, try stinging nettle tea. Stinging nettle is a great source of nitrogen and acts as a natural repellent for insects and diseases. To make it, simply add stinging nettle leaves to a pot of boiling water, and let it sit overnight. If you’re applying this to the roots make sure to dilute the solution and pour around the base of the plant.
