Shrubby tororaro, mingimingi or wiggywig (Muehlenbeckia astonii) is a deciduous perennial shrub endemic to New Zealand. It forms a dense network of interlacing, zigzag branches with tiny heart-shaped green leaves. Small cream-white flowers appear from spring into summer. Where pollinated, female plants produce translucent white fruit surrounding prominent black seeds, providing food for native lizards and birds.

This hardy shrub suits informal hedges, mixed borders, exposed gardens and native restoration planting. Grow in full sun and free-draining soil. Water while establishing; its deep roots provide good drought tolerance once mature. It typically reaches 1–2 m in gardens but may eventually grow taller.

Native origin: New Zealand
Plant type: Deciduous perennial shrub
Companion Plants: Coprosma crassifolia, small-leaved pōhuehue, coastal tree daisy, tauhinu and carex.

Key difference: Interlacing zigzag branches carry tiny heart-shaped leaves. Deciduous native shrub ideal for hedging, exposed sites and wildlife gardens.
