Creeping pōhuehue or creeping muehlenbeckia (Muehlenbeckia axillaris) is a low-growing perennial ground cover native to New Zealand and southeastern Australia. Wiry red-brown stems form a dense mat of small, rounded dark green leaves. Tiny cream-white flowers appear in summer, followed by opaque white fruit on female plants, providing food for birds and geckos.

Creeping pōhuehue is useful for rockeries, banks, retaining walls, exposed gardens and covering low structures. Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and avoid wet or waterlogged sites. Once established, it tolerates wind and dry conditions. It generally reaches around 10 cm tall and spreads 1–2 m.

Native origin: New Zealand and southeastern Australia
Plant type: Perennial mat-forming ground cover
Companion Plants: Libertia, carex, sand coprosma, hebe and native tussocks.

Key difference: Wiry red-brown stems form a very low spreading mat. Low native ground cover suited to rockeries, banks and exposed gardens.
