Small-leaved pōhuehue (Muehlenbeckia complexa)
A vigorous native vine with tangled reddish-brown stems and small, rounded green leaves. Tiny, lightly scented greenish-white flowers appear from late spring into summer, followed on female plants by translucent white fruit containing black seeds. Its dense growth provides valuable shelter for native lizards and insects.
It can climb 4–5 m with support or spread several metres as ground cover. Use it on fences, banks, walls, coastal sites and for informal topiary. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates frost, wind, salt spray and dry periods. Prune regularly to contain its vigorous growth and prevent it overwhelming nearby plants.

Companion Plants: Carex, coastal flaxes, coprosmas, taupata and rengarenga lilies.
