Hawera sand coprosma (Coprosma acerosa ‘Hawera’)
A hardy native ground cover with fine green leaves and slender orange stems that interlace to create a dense, moss-like carpet. Its evergreen foliage provides soft texture and reliable colour throughout the year.
Growing approximately 30–60 cm tall and 1–2 m wide, it is ideal for suppressing weeds, covering banks, softening retaining walls and planting in rockeries or coastal landscapes. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates drought, frost, wind, salt spray and poor sandy soils. Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Little pruning is required beyond an occasional light trim. Additional ref: Auckland Botanic Gardens
