Austroderia toetoe (commonly “toetoe”) – New Zealand native grass
Austroderia toetoe is one of New Zealand’s iconic native grasses, known for its tall, striking flowering plumes. It belongs to the genus Austroderia, which contains NZ’s true toetoe species (distinct from the introduced pampas grasses). It's commonly found in coastal areas. Grows in dense clumps typically 1.5–3 m tall, sometimes up to 4m in ideal conditions.
It can also be found in wetlands, riverbanks, and open forest edges.
Popular in native gardens, revegetation projects, and as a dramatic ornamental grass..
Hardy and wind-tolerant, it thrives in full sun and moist soils but is adaptable.
