Black Maire is native to New Zealand - it grows on the North & South Island - montane and coastal regions.
It can handle frost.
Stout gynodioecious spreading tree up to 25 m tall usually forming a broadly domed canopy; trunk up to 1·5m diameter, sometimes with several arising from base, usually straight and arching, sometimes twisted; bark firm (not flaking), grey-brown to dark brown, tessellated.
