TAWA
Tawa
Beilschmiedia tawa is a large evergreen native tree grown for its glossy green foliage and tall forest-forming habit. This New Zealand species develops a straight trunk with a broad canopy of smooth, dark green leaves. Small greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by dark purple fruit that are important for native birds. Tawa grows best in sheltered positions with deep, well-drained soil and prefers frost-free or mild conditions when young. Suitable for larger New Zealand gardens and restoration planting, it is commonly used as a shade tree and in native revegetation projects.
Key difference: Native forest tree important for bird habitat.
