New Zealand iris or mikoikoi (Libertia peregrinans) is an evergreen, rhizomatous perennial endemic to New Zealand. It forms spreading fans of narrow, sword-like leaves with distinctive orange or red veins. Foliage often develops strong copper-orange colouring in full sun. White, iris-like flowers appear from spring to midsummer, followed by seed capsules.
Mikoikoi spreads through horizontal underground stems, making it useful for ground cover, borders, coastal gardens and native restoration planting. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist soil. Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods. It generally reaches 30–60 cm tall and gradually forms broad colonies.
