Dragon’s Gold kōwhai (Sophora molloyi ‘Dragon’s Gold’) is a compact evergreen perennial shrub selected in New Zealand from Cook Strait kōwhai material originating on Stephens Island. It has a dense, spreading habit with fine green foliage. Clusters of bright golden-yellow flowers appear from winter into spring, earlier than many larger kōwhai, providing nectar for tūī, bellbirds and other native birds. Seed pods may follow flowering.

This cultivar suits smaller gardens, containers, banks, native borders and specimen planting. Grow in full sun or partial shade in free-draining soil. Water while establishing; mature plants tolerate wind, coastal exposure and dry periods. Lightly trim after flowering if shaping is required. It generally reaches 1.5–2 m tall and wide.

Native origin: New Zealand cultivar of an endemic Cook Strait species
Plant type: Evergreen perennial shrub
Companion Plants: Hebe, corokia, coprosma, libertia and carex.

Key difference: Compact kōwhai flowering earlier than most larger varieties. Early golden flowers suit small gardens, containers and bird-friendly planting.
