Green Gem box (Buxus ‘Green Gem’, often sold as Buxus microphylla ‘Green Gem’) is a compact evergreen perennial shrub with small, glossy dark-green leaves. It grows slowly into a naturally dense, rounded mound approximately 60–90 cm tall and wide. Tiny yellow-green flowers appear in spring but are generally inconspicuous.
‘Green Gem’ suits low hedges, formal borders, topiary, pathways and containers. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods, avoiding waterlogged conditions. Trim lightly after the risk of frost has passed. Good airflow and watering at soil level help reduce box-blight risk.
Native origin: Cultivated hybrid developed in Canada — not native to New Zealand
