Blue Sapphire Californian lilac (Ceanothus ‘Blue Sapphire’) is an evergreen perennial shrub with arching stems and glossy, very dark-green foliage tinted purple or bronze. Tight clusters of rich sapphire-blue flowers appear during mid to late spring, attracting bees and other pollinating insects.
It typically grows around 1–1.2 m tall and spreads 1.5–2 m wide. ‘Blue Sapphire’ suits sunny banks, groundcover planting, mixed borders, coastal gardens and low informal hedges. Plant in full sun in fertile, free-draining soil, sheltered from strong, cold winds. Water regularly while establishing; mature plants tolerate dry conditions but dislike waterlogged soil. Prune lightly after flowering, avoiding cuts into old bare wood.
