Houhere, lacebark or ribbonwood (Hoheria populnea) is a fast-growing evergreen perennial tree endemic to New Zealand. It develops an upright to spreading canopy with glossy, toothed green leaves. Large white flowers appear from January to March, often covering the branches and attracting bees and other pollinating insects. Winged brown seeds follow during autumn.
Houhere suits native gardens, restoration planting, screening, shelter and larger mixed borders. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and provide shelter from severe frost when young. It can reach approximately 8 m tall and responds well to pruning when used for screening or shelter.
