Botanical correction: Rewarewa is Knightia excelsa, not Kniphofia excelsa.

Rewarewa or New Zealand honeysuckle (Knightia excelsa) is a tall evergreen native tree with an upright, columnar habit and leathery, coarsely toothed leaves. Dense crimson, bottlebrush-like flowers appear from spring to early summer, providing nectar for tūī, bellbirds and insects.

Rewarewa can eventually reach 20–30 m tall, making it best suited to large gardens, native revegetation, shelter planting and woodland settings. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and protect young plants from hard frost and cold winds. Its naturally narrow form provides useful height without developing an especially broad crown.

Native origin: Endemic to New Zealand; naturally found throughout the North Island and in the Marlborough Sounds
Plant type: Evergreen perennial tree
Companion Plants: Kōwhai, māhoe, karamu, koromiko and cabbage tree.

Key difference: Tall, columnar native with distinctive crimson flowers. Evergreen tree providing vertical structure and valuable nectar for native wildlife.
