Tītoki (Alectryon excelsus) is an evergreen perennial tree endemic to New Zealand. It develops a broad, spreading canopy with glossy compound leaves and attractive textured bark. Small reddish flowers appear mainly from spring to early summer, followed by furry brown capsules that open to reveal black seeds surrounded by bright scarlet flesh. The fruit attracts native birds.
Tītoki suits larger gardens, native plantings and sheltered specimen positions. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and protect young plants from severe frost. It can eventually reach 10–20 m tall in favourable conditions.
