Alectryon excelsus is an evergreen native tree grown for its glossy dark green foliage and attractive seasonal fruit. This New Zealand species forms a rounded canopy with compound leaves that provide year-round structure. Small greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by distinctive capsules that split open to reveal bright red arils and black seeds. Alectryon grows best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil and tolerates coastal conditions once established. Suitable for many New Zealand gardens, it is commonly used as a shade tree, feature tree and in native planting projects.
