KARAKA
Karaka
Corynocarpus laevigatus, commonly known as Karaka, is a large evergreen native tree grown for its glossy dark green foliage and dense, rounded canopy. This New Zealand species produces small greenish flowers in spring followed by bright orange berries in autumn. The bold leaves and strong form make it a prominent feature in landscapes. Karaka grows best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil and tolerates coastal conditions and wind. Suitable for many New Zealand gardens in mild climates, it is commonly used as a shelter tree, shade tree and in coastal or native plantings.
Key difference: Large glossy leaves with bright orange berries.
