Winter Cheer mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium ‘Winter Cheer’) is a dense, bushy evergreen shrub with fine reddish foliage. Large, double bright-red flowers appear abundantly from winter into early spring, providing strong colour during the cooler months.
Growing approximately 1.5 m tall and wide, it suits mixed native borders, informal hedges, containers and feature planting. Grow in full sun for the best flowering and foliage colour, in free-draining soil. Water regularly while establishing and avoid persistently wet ground. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought, wind and coastal exposure. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape, avoiding hard cuts into older bare wood.
Native origin: Species indigenous to New Zealand and southeastern Australia; ‘Winter Cheer’ is a cultivated selection
Plant type: Evergreen perennial shrub
Companion Plants: Koromiko, coprosma, corokia, libertia and native carex.
Key difference: Double bright-red flowers during winter and early spring. Bushy evergreen mānuka for hedges, borders and colourful feature planting.
