Wiri Joan mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium ‘Wiri Joan’) is an upright evergreen shrub with fine, tidy green foliage. Small double red flowers cover the stems during spring, generally from October to November, attracting bees and other beneficial insects.
Growing approximately 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide, it suits native hedges, mixed borders, banks, screening and feature planting. Grow in full sun in free-draining soil. Water thoroughly during establishment; mature plants tolerate frost, drought, wind and coastal exposure. Lightly prune after flowering to encourage dense growth, avoiding cuts into old bare wood that may not regrow.
Native origin: Bred at Auckland Botanic Gardens, New Zealand; species indigenous to New Zealand and southeastern Australia
Plant type: Evergreen perennial shrub
Companion Plants: Koromiko, coprosma, corokia, libertia and native carex.
