Gracipes polished-leaved magnolia (Magnolia laevifolia ‘Gracipes’; syn. Michelia yunnanensis ‘Gracipes’)
A tidy evergreen shrub or small tree with a naturally pyramidal habit and rounded, deep green leaves. Velvety buds open from early spring, producing an abundant and long-lasting display of fragrant, creamy-white flowers.
Growing approximately 4 m tall and 3 m wide over ten years, it is ideal for hedging, topiary or as a specimen tree. Plant in full sun or light shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Mulch to conserve moisture and water during prolonged dry periods. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain its shape, and shelter young plants and flower buds from severe frost and cold winds.
Native origin: Parent species native to south-central China—not native to New Zealand
