White Caviar evergreen magnolia (Magnolia laevifolia × figo ‘White Caviar’; syn. Michelia ‘White Caviar’)
A compact evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green foliage and an upright, spreading habit. Masses of fragrant, creamy-white flowers with distinctive pink-red centres appear in spring, often continuing intermittently through summer and autumn.
Growing approximately 4 m tall and 2 m wide, it suits hedging, screening, pleaching, containers and feature planting. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods, mulch around the roots and feed in spring. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a dense shape, and shelter young plants from severe frost and cold winds.
Native origin: Garden hybrid of magnolia species native to China—not native to New Zealand
