Bubbles michelia (Michelia × foggii ‘Bubbles’; syn. Magnolia × foggii ‘Bubbles’)
An elegant evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, deep green foliage and a naturally pyramidal habit. Velvety buds open from late winter into spring, revealing rounded, cream-white flowers delicately edged with soft pink and carrying a light fragrance.
Growing approximately 4 m tall and 3 m wide, it makes an attractive specimen, screen or flowering hedge. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during dry weather, mulch around the roots and feed in spring. Lightly trim after flowering if shaping is required, and protect young plants from heavy frost and strong winds.
Native origin: Garden hybrid selected in Whangārei from Asian parent species—not a New Zealand native
