Chocomint New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax ‘Chocomint’)
A compact evergreen flax with upright, arching leaves in deep chocolate-brown to maroon, each finished with a bright green margin. Mature clumps occasionally produce tall stems of red tubular flowers during summer, adding seasonal interest and nectar for birds.
Growing approximately 80 cm to 1 m tall and wide, it provides colourful structure in borders, coastal gardens, containers and mass plantings. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil; good light develops the richest foliage colour. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. Once settled, it tolerates frost, wind and coastal exposure. Remove old or weather-damaged leaves at their base in spring.
