Red Leopard horopito (Pseudowintera colorata ‘Red Leopard’)
A colourful evergreen native shrub with aromatic foliage. Young leaves emerge rich red before maturing to gold-green, boldly patterned with deep-red spots and margins. Its distinctive colouring remains attractive throughout the year, with brighter light generally encouraging stronger red tones.
Usually maintained around 1–1.5 m tall and wide, it can eventually reach approximately 3 m tall and 2 m wide if left untrimmed. It suits feature planting, low hedges, mixed native borders and containers. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, mulch annually and feed in spring. Once settled, it tolerates frost, wind and short dry periods.
