Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)
A vigorous evergreen climber with glossy, dark-green leaves that may develop bronze-red tones during colder weather. Clusters of highly fragrant, creamy-white, star-shaped flowers appear through spring and summer, bringing perfume to patios, entrances and outdoor living areas.
When supported, it can climb 4–8 m and spread around 1 m; as a groundcover, it forms a dense mat approximately 50 cm tall and 2–3 m wide. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil, sheltered from cold winds and severe frost. Provide wires or a trellis for climbing stems. Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods. Prune after flowering to control growth, wearing gloves because its milky sap may irritate skin.
