Blue Diamond bigleaf or mophead hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue Diamond’) is a compact deciduous perennial shrub with a rounded, upright habit and dark-green foliage. Large mophead flower clusters appear from summer into autumn, developing their strongest blue colouring in acidic soil with available aluminium. In less acidic conditions, the flowers may become mauve or pink.
Growing approximately 1 m tall and wide, ‘Blue Diamond’ suits shaded borders, containers, cottage gardens and informal hedges. Plant in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods and mulch to retain moisture. Shelter from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun. Prune lightly after flowering, removing dead or weak stems without cutting away healthy flower buds.
