Doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum)
A graceful deciduous shrub with distinctive tiered, horizontal branches and deeply veined green leaves. White lacecap flower clusters line the branches in spring, followed by red berries that ripen to black. The foliage develops warm red and orange tones in autumn.
Growing approximately 2.5–4 m tall and wide, it makes an impressive specimen or background shrub. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods. Minimal pruning is required; remove unwanted growth immediately after flowering to preserve its naturally layered form.
