Burning Questions

How should I take care of my seedlings?

For it to grow and mature into a healthy, robust plant, a new seedling needs care and attention. At Awapuni Nurseries we have done most of the leg work for you by providing a young plant that has been nurtured every step of the way.

We even have staff members regularly visiting the retail outlets that stock our range. They check for plant damage and replenish any old stock. Plant orders are dispatched via courier for next-day delivery; this locks in freshness and guarantees the finest quality.

The key to healthy growth is to ensure that your new seedlings are planted in well-watered soil as soon as possible. Don't leave them hidden away on the backdoor step or stored in the laundry tub for a week. We suggest you choose a time during the afternoon to plant and water your seedlings.

With the sun's rays less damaging as the day concludes, your plants can appreciate this quiet, settling-in period, taking up liquid throughout the evening and bracing themselves for the following day. The threat of extreme sunlight damage can be avoided with simple (but effective) newspaper shading for the first day. Likewise, seedlings in pots are best kept away from any direct sunlight for approximately a week.

Winter can be a particularly trying time for plants. Seedlings such as Cineraria, Livingstone Daisy and Nemesia are prone to frost damage.

Your best defense against harm is to plant these varieties under trees or near your house. Another unwelcome addition to the garden are slugs and snails. In particular, their favourite targets include Delphiniums, Petunias, Lettuces, Tomatoes and Larkspurs.

Keep slugs and snails at a distance; lay some commercially available bait around any threatened seedlings.
