Cape Gooseberry
Cape gooseberries, also known as the Peruvian groundcherry is a juicy little berry that's encased in a "Chinese Lantern". The berries are best eaten raw but are a great accompaniment to preserves or seafood dishes. They're also high in vitamin A, B & C and are rich in iron.
You can grow cape gooseberries in pots but they are not tolerant to drought and need plenty of water if in a pot. They are usually grown as annuals but they can be perennial in warmer climates. They fruit in 4-5 months after you plant the seedling.
They are beautiful plant with orange fruits. Some gardeners use plant them at the edge of their garden and some in big pots in their patios.
- Plant 50-60cm apart
- Sun Exposure: Full sun in cold climates
- partial sun in warmer climate
- Soil Type: Well-drained soil, sandy or clay
- well-watered when seedlings are young
- no fertiliser needed as it could encourage loss of vegetation
- harvest when the lantern changes to a golden brown and has a papery texture.
