Jester New Zealand flax (Phormium ‘Jester’)
A colourful evergreen flax forming a broad clump of arching leaves. Grey-green centres are irregularly bordered with butter yellow and fine red edges, while strong light encourages pink-red streaking. Red and chartreuse flowers rise above the foliage in summer, attracting nectar-feeding birds.
Growing approximately 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide, it suits mixed borders, banks, coastal gardens and large containers. Plant in full sun for the strongest colour or partial shade, in fertile, free-draining soil. Once established, it tolerates frost, wind and salt spray. Remove damaged leaves, reverted shoots and spent flower stems at the base.
Native origin: Cultivar derived from New Zealand-native Phormium species
