Platt’s Black New Zealand flax (Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’)
A dramatic evergreen flax forming a dense clump of slender, arching leaves. Its glossy foliage ranges from deep purple and chocolate-brown to almost black, creating strong year-round contrast. Mature plants may produce upright stems of tubular red flowers in summer, attracting nectar-feeding birds.
Growing approximately 1.2 m tall and 1–1.5 m wide, it suits feature planting, mixed borders, coastal gardens and large containers. Plant in full sun for the darkest foliage or partial shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing; mature plants tolerate salt spray and short dry periods. Remove old or damaged leaves at the base.
Native origin: Cultivar derived from New Zealand-native Phormium species
