Dark Delight New Zealand flax (Phormium ‘Dark Delight’)
An evergreen flax grown for its narrow, arching leaves in deep reddish-brown to dark bronze shades. Mature plants may produce tall stems of tubular red flowers in summer, providing nectar for native birds.
Growing approximately 1–1.2 m tall and up to 1.5 m wide, it creates strong contrast in borders, coastal gardens, mass planting and large containers. Plant in full sun for the deepest foliage colour or partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates coastal conditions and short dry periods. Remove old or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a tidy clump.
Native origin: Cultivar derived from New Zealand-native Phormium species
