Firebird New Zealand flax (Phormium ‘Firebird’)
A colourful evergreen flax with broad, upright, sword-like leaves. New foliage is rich rose-red with bronze-green margins, developing warmer bronze-orange tones through summer. Mature plants may produce tall stems of tubular red flowers that provide nectar for birds.
Growing approximately 1.2–1.5 m tall and around 1 m wide, it adds year-round colour to borders, coastal gardens, mass plantings and large containers. Plant in full sun for the strongest red colouring or partial shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing. Once settled, it tolerates wind, salt spray and short dry periods. Remove damaged outer leaves and old flower stems at the base.
Native origin: Cultivar derived from New Zealand-native Phormium species
