Dusky Chief New Zealand flax (Phormium ‘Dusky Chief’)
A striking evergreen flax with broad, upright leaves that arch gracefully at their tips. The foliage develops rich plum-red to reddish-bronze colouring, with contrasting blue-toned undersides. Mature plants may also produce tall flower stems that attract nectar-feeding birds.
Growing approximately 1.2–1.5 m tall and wide, it makes a bold feature in mixed borders, mass plantings, coastal gardens and large containers. Plant in full sun for the richest foliage colour, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing; mature plants tolerate wind, coastal exposure and occasional dry periods. Remove old or damaged outer leaves at their base.
Native origin: Cultivar derived from New Zealand-native Phormium species
