Black Rage New Zealand flax (Phormium ‘Black Rage’)
A bold evergreen flax with upright, semi-weeping leaves in rich black, grey-black and blue-black tones, complemented by silvery-blue undersides. Tall stems carrying red and chartreuse flowers may appear from late spring into summer, providing nectar for native birds.
Growing approximately 80 cm tall and 60 cm wide, it is noticeably larger than the dwarf ‘Black Magic’. Use it in borders, banks, rock gardens, coastal landscapes or large containers. Plant in full sun for the strongest foliage colour, or partial shade, in fertile, free-draining soil. Water regularly while establishing; mature plants tolerate frost, wind, salt spray and short dry periods. Remove damaged leaves and spent flower stems at their base.
Native origin: Cultivar derived from New Zealand-native Phormium species
