Surfer New Zealand flax (Phormium cookianum ‘Surfer’)
A compact evergreen flax with upright, arching leaves that twist gently like waves. The green foliage is highlighted by dark bronze-red margins and midribs, creating changing colour as the leaves move. Upright stems of red flowers may occasionally appear in summer.
Growing approximately 80 cm tall and wide, ‘Surfer’ suits smaller borders, pathway planting, coastal gardens, mass planting and containers. Plant in full sun for the strongest colouring or partial shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. Once settled, it tolerates wind, coastal exposure and frost. Remove old or damaged outer leaves at the base.
