Primulas - Tod

Even if you manage to get out in the garden during the wild weather we've been having, you could be left wondering what to plant, given the weak sunlight.

This time of year primulas are a great option, as they cope well without much sun and flower in the winter and spring. Actually, the word primula comes from the Latin "primus" which refers to flowers that are among the first to open in spring.

Primulas are a family of several hundred flowering plants which includes wild flowers, primroses and cowslip. They come in colours such as purple, yellow, red and pink and will add some much needed brightness to your garden in the colder months. Plus, they're pretty and perfect if you're after a cottage garden look - try combining them with other plants such as cornflowers, foxgloves and peonies.

Primulas are easy to grow and care for. First of all, pick up some Awapuni Nurseries primula seedlings from your local supermarket, The Warehouse, or Bunnings. Or, head to our online store and get your seedlings delivered direct to your door. Once you've decided on a spot in your garden, dig in a balanced fertiliser such as nitrophoska blue and a rich organic compost, and then plant. To promote flowers, feed them dry blood. In about six to eight weeks these lovely flowers should bloom.

And if you'd rather stay within your four walls, you'll be pleased to know primulas do really well in doors in pots. Just make sure you use a container that drains well and opt for an indoor potting mix as this doesn't retain as much water.
