Types of Lavenders

Here's a quick guide on some lavender varieties grown by Awapuni Nurseries.

Build a garden, butterflies will come.

Lavender flowers bring in butterflies and bees, true pollinator magnets.
English Lavender -Hidcote, Lady and Munstead
- easiest to grow
- considered ‘true lavender’ due to their smell.
- can tolerate colder winters and hotter summers with smaller
- can last up to 15 years

1. Hidcote - very fragrant, deep blue flowers, grows to a height of 35cm.
Great for Pots, tubs and window boxes.
more compact and they have a deeper, violet-blue colour.

2. Lady - perfect for planting in pots, grows to a height of 20cm

3. Munstead - great as border, bedding, dry flower, grows to a height of 50cm.

French lavender
- blooms much longer. It has a shorter lifespan (around 5 years).
- Ideal for hedging but can also be grown in pots
- Grows to a height of 100cm or more
- They can form beautiful hedges.

Spanish Lavender
- The flower spikes contain dark purple- violet flowers with beautiful purple flags (bracts) on top or rabbit ears.
- Grows to a height of 20cm, spread of 25cm
- Great for pots, tubs, window boxes
