BERBA
Berberis Atropurpurea
Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea’ is a deciduous shrub grown for its rich purple-red foliage and dense, thorny branching habit. This barberry forms a compact shrub with small rounded leaves that provide strong colour contrast through spring and summer. Small yellow flowers appear in spring and may be followed by red berries in autumn. The foliage can develop deeper red tones before leaf fall. Berberis grows best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil and tolerates pruning well. Suitable for many New Zealand gardens, it is commonly used for hedging, borders and barrier planting.
Key difference: Deep purple-red foliage on dense thorny shrub.
