Cryptomeria japonica is an evergreen conifer tree grown for its soft feathery foliage and tall, conical growth habit. This tree forms a dense, upright shape with bright green needles that may take on bronze tones in cooler weather. Small cones develop on mature trees, adding seasonal interest. Cryptomeria grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and performs well in sheltered positions. Suitable for many New Zealand gardens and larger landscapes, it is commonly used for shelter, screening and feature planting.
