Mustard Tatsoi Red (Brassica rapa var. narinosa) is a fast-growing Asian leafy vegetable grown for its tender reddish-purple leaves, crisp stems and mild mustard flavour.
This cool-season green forms attractive rosettes of rounded, spoon-shaped leaves. Harvest the young leaves for salads or allow them to mature for use in stir-fries, soups and other cooked dishes.
Tatsoi grows best in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture. It performs particularly well in cooler conditions, and the outer leaves can be picked as needed for an extended harvest.
Well suited to New Zealand vegetable gardens, it grows easily in garden beds, raised planters and containers.
Tatsoi is an Asian green of Chinese origin and is also widely used in Japanese cooking. It grows well alongside lettuce, spinach and spring onions in cool-season gardens.
