Chatham Island astelia or kakaha (Astelia chathamica) is an evergreen perennial endemic to New Zealand’s Chatham Islands. It forms a bold clump of broad, arching, flax-like leaves with a distinctive silvery sheen, reaching approximately 1.5 m tall. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants. Greenish flowers appear from spring to early summer, followed by orange or red fruit on female plants.
This astelia is well suited to coastal gardens, containers, raised beds and mass planting. Grow in full sun or partial shade with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly while establishing, mulch to retain moisture and avoid waterlogged conditions. It tolerates wind and coastal exposure.

Companion Plants: Chatham Island forget-me-not, rengarenga lily, carex, coprosma and hebe.
