Aloe vera or Barbados aloe (Aloe vera) is an evergreen succulent perennial with a compact rosette of thick, fleshy grey-green leaves edged with small teeth. The leaves contain the clear gel for which the plant is widely known. Mature plants may produce tall stems of tubular greenish-yellow flowers under warm conditions.
In New Zealand, aloe vera is best grown in a sunny container, bright indoor position or warm, frost-free garden. Use gritty, free-draining soil and allow it to dry between waterings. Water sparingly during winter and protect from frost and prolonged rain. Plants generally reach 50–60 cm tall, with flower stems extending higher.
Native origin: Northern Oman, Arabian Peninsula — not native to New Zealand
