Dawn redwood is a fast-growing deciduous conifer with an elegant, pyramidal form and reddish-brown, fibrous bark, native to central China. Its soft, feathery green foliage develops bronze, gold and reddish-brown tones before falling in autumn—an unusual feature among conifers.
Growing approximately 20–30 m tall and 8–12 m wide in New Zealand, it is best suited to parks, lifestyle properties, avenues and large gardens.
Plant in full sun with plenty of room, in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. It tolerates cold, wind and periodically wet ground.
