Mangatangi coprosma (Coprosma rhamnoides ‘Mangatangi’) is a compact evergreen perennial shrub endemic to New Zealand. It forms a dense mound of interlacing, divaricating branches with tiny bright-green leaves. The yellowish young stems become particularly noticeable when wet or illuminated by low sunlight. Small flowers are inconspicuous.

‘Mangatangi’ grows approximately 75 cm tall and 60 cm wide, naturally maintaining its compact shape with little pruning. It suits native gardens, rockeries, borders, group planting, coastal landscapes and smaller gardens. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Water thoroughly while establishing and during extended dry periods. It tolerates wind, coastal exposure and some drought but should be protected from severe frost.

Native origin: Endemic to New Zealand; this selection was discovered near Mangatangi Reservoir in the Hunua Ranges

Companion Plants: Carex, libertia, compact hebes, rengarenga lilies and Muehlenbeckia astonii.
