Dark Secret coral bells or alum root (Heuchera ‘Dark Secret’) is an evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial forming a compact mound of heavily ruffled, deep purple-bronze to almost-black leaves with a subtle silver sheen. Slender stems carry sprays of small cream-white flowers from pink buds during summer.
Growing approximately 25 cm tall and 40 cm wide, ‘Dark Secret’ suits borders, edging, containers, woodland gardens and underplanting shrubs. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Protect it from harsh afternoon sun in warmer areas. Mulch annually, remove faded flower stems and divide established clumps every three to four years if growth becomes crowded.
Native origin: Cultivar discovered in France; the genus is native to North America — not native to New Zealand
