Britt-Marie Crawford black-leaved ligularia (Ligularia dentata ‘Britt-Marie Crawford’)
A clump-forming perennial with large, rounded leaves that emerge purple-black and mature to dark bronze-green. Purple leaf undersides and stems add further interest, while tall clusters of golden-orange, daisy-like flowers appear from late summer into autumn.
Growing approximately 80–120 cm tall in flower and 60–100 cm wide, it suits shaded borders, woodland gardens and pond edges. Plant in partial or dappled shade with rich, consistently moist soil. Mulch well, water during dry weather and protect from slugs and snails. Cut back after the foliage dies down in winter.
Native origin: Species native to China and Japan; cultivar selected in Scotland—not native to New Zealand
