Encore mandarin (Citrus reticulata ‘Encore’)
A vigorous, self-fertile evergreen citrus tree with glossy dark-green foliage and fragrant white flowers. It produces generous crops of juicy, richly flavoured orange mandarins that ripen later than many other varieties and can remain on the tree for an extended harvest.
Growing approximately 2–3 m tall and 1.5–2.5 m wide, it suits home orchards, sunny gardens and large containers. Plant in full sun, sheltered from strong winds and hard frost, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water consistently during flowering and fruit development, mulch to retain moisture and feed regularly with citrus fertiliser through spring and summer. Protect young trees from frost and prune lightly after harvest if required.
Native origin: California, USA
Plant type: Evergreen fruit tree
Companion Plants: Lavender, rosemary, thyme, alyssum and marigolds.
Key difference: Late fruiting extends the home-grown mandarin season into summer. Vigorous self-fertile mandarin producing juicy, richly flavoured fruit over a long late-season harvest.
