Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu)

A compact, self-fertile evergreen citrus tree producing sweet, juicy mandarins with thin, easy-peel skin and usually no seeds. Fragrant white flowers appear in spring and summer, followed by fruit that ripens early in the citrus season, generally from May to July in New Zealand.

Growing approximately 2–3 m tall and wide when maintained, it suits home orchards, smaller gardens and large containers. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, with shelter from strong winds. Satsuma is more cold-tolerant than many citrus varieties, although young trees should still be protected from hard frost. Water consistently while establishing and during fruit development, mulch around the root zone and apply citrus fertiliser regularly.

Native origin: East Asia; developed in Japan
Plant type: Evergreen fruit tree
Companion Plants: Lavender, thyme, alyssum, marigolds and nasturtiums.

Key difference: Early, seedless fruit peels easily and tolerates cooler conditions. Compact mandarin producing sweet, seedless, easy-peel fruit from autumn through winter.
